In another month I will be ready to add The last two fish from my stocking list to qt. I am planning to add a blenny (probably a tailspot) and a goby (thinking ywg). Since the goby is a sand sifter I want to add sand to the qt. Will this cause a cycle? Should I use live sand? I plan to add a seeded sponge from the DT and use water from it for water changes.
Also will there be compatibility issues between the blenny and goby in a 10gallon qt?
Last question is, though I know copper can’t be added to a qt with sand, can I still do a prazi treatment for good measure? I plan to observe in qt for 6 weeks to see if there are any signs of velvet, ich, etc.

You can bring them through QT without sand and they'll be fine as long as they're eating. Just provide PVC fittings for them to hide in/behind. If you really want to have sand, put a small amount of sand in a tupperware container rather than filling the bottom of the tank. Live sand wouldn't hurt, but I don't think it is necessary and I don't think you'll see a cycle because you added sand. The sponge will provide the microbes to break down ammonia.

Okay. Thanks for the reply. I had a velvet outbreak back in February. I had a ywg who died after about 5 weeks. The copper treatment was already finished and he didn’t show signs of illness so I wasn’t sure if the goby died due to a combination of stress and no sand. That’s why I thought maybe it would be a good idea to add it.

Agreed that the ywg doesn't need sand, it is a watchman species, not a sifter, so any sand moving they do is to create a burrow/den, not as a search for food.
