hey guys,

So ive quarantined before but only once.

I have a dwarf moray in qt for a week now.

After it ate for the first time i started preventive gc treatmend and will do cp later on.

Today i got home realusing my ammonia alert batch showed some present ammonia.
I immediately tested and got a reading of 0.8 ammonia and 0.1 nitrite.

I used prime immedeately aswell as prepung water for a water change.

I just want to doublecheck since its a pricey fish and im kinda freaking out rn.

The tank was running empty for about a month where i only ghostfed twice.(apparently not often enough)

I have seeded sponges in my dt. I just put a new one into my hob filter.

Is there any risk in leaving the moray in the qt? Should i just transfer to my dt? Im kinda worried about the fish!

I think ive done everything necesery. Can soneone confirm??:3

Do you have any live rock you can transfer over and sacrifice? That'll be the best preventative if your seeded sponge doesn't reduce it quickly enough.

With an eel, they are messy eaters with a large bioload. I would remove uneaten food and fish waste quickly throughout QT.

I personally would not risk my DT stock, but it would be a personal question you would need to answer based on your observations and risks.

Its a small eel, like 2” atm. The shippment was delayed so the tank was empty for some time. Therefore not enough waste to feed nitrifying bacteria.

I lost 90% of my lifestock to brook before i got my qt system.

Now its only coral, inverts and a clownpair atm in the dt.

All clowns went throgh treatment and qt.

My question is, after using prime and the seeded sponge, ammonia should go down right? The fish wont be harmed in that time?

I actually measured just now and i had a lower reading allready like 0,2-0,4

So when using prime, it'll give you false readings. Prime binds with ammonia (but you'll still see it when testing) and allows you enough time to lower it via water changes.

Nitrifying bacteria needs to be added (via your sponge from DT or a bacteria-in-a-bottle) to handle it going forward.

Your eel should be fine for now, but get that ammonia removed via WC and keep proactive around removing uneaten food and waste.

Okay thanks!

I have added bacteria from the bottle aswell.

So for now the ammonia isnt poisonous. Also if my testings show lower readings the bacteria in sponge/from bottle is working allready.

Last but not least i did dose the tank with ati general cure. That should only be present for about 48h anyways. So if i do a wc tomorrow and repeat dosage the fish should be safe aswell es treated.

Thank you for your help!

Since my tests still gave me an ammonia reading, i put some porous media from my dt refugium into the qt.

Ill leave it in the tank untill ammonia is stable at 0 again.

Are you using an ammonia badge? If not I'd highly recommend it. Works for a year and gives continuous readings. Makes QT much simpler!
