So I have an interesting story. I had my first two clownfish in quarantine (a 10gal Nuovo) and being new to reefing have been super nervous (read: probably over feeding them!).

They were down to their last week of prophylactic cupramine, and we go to check on them and they are completely gone. This tank has a lid still on it, and it felt like they were too big to get filtered through...can't find them anywhere. Turns out one of my home-brew beers exploded underneath the aquarium, shattering the glass, causing a slow leak and freaked out the two fish so bad they managed to jump out.

Pretty sad end to my first saltwater fish. Has anyone else lost fish in strange ways during quarantine?

Sorry it went that way! :(

Pretty sad end to a fermented (thus totally alive) beverage too.

I've lost keffir water that way, but on the flavoring/carbonation phase....dangerous.

It's bad advice, BTW, to totally seal something that's being carbonated. Even if they tell you to – even if thte vessel in question says it's made for such purpose.

A tight seal is not necessary in the first place  and it literally turns your brew into a bomb.

All you need is a "seal" on your vessel that's good enough to keep out dust, bugs and wind.

You basically just use the ring to hold the lid in place – you don't really clamp down on the lid. (Gotta know what a mason jar lid+ring is to understand that.)
For my case, lightly sealed mason jars, which they tell you not to use, are perfect. Under stress – say you over tighten a little by accident – the lids just deform and just let out the excess CO2. You can buy lids by the 10-pack for almost nothing.

So CO2 should definitely be able to escape and in the process should keep air from coming in as well. CO2 is heavier than air, so if you didn't mind a little dust and bugs, you literally don't have to do anything to carbonate your bev but keep the CO2 from blowing away.

But whatever you use do not seal your vessel tightly.

IF YOU HAD TO TAKE A REEFING EXAM, WOULD YOU PASS?
