Quarantine/nano reef tank?

I've had my 29g cube up and running for 6 months now, and have enjoyed it more than I ever imagined I would. I do not have a quarantine tank yet, and a recent ich scare has jump started my desire, and my understanding of a need for one.

Here is my current 29g biocube. Since this picture I've added a rock in the middle to create a few more tunnels and caves, a diamond Goby which is keeping my sand extremely clean now, as well as a Hollywood stunner chalice which is doing well.

Now, my idea is to get a quarantine tank up and going, but make it a tank that is a beautiful display tank as well. I only have 4 fish, and don't plan on getting any more, so it will not be a heavily used quarantine tank. I want a small nano tank that will house a small bit of live rock, sand, and a few pieces of hardy soft coral.

Even if having a quarantine tank that is also a display tank isn't possible, I want a little nano with some pretty coral in our living room anyways! So, does anybody have any suggestions on hardware to get this thing up and running?

I think what you may want is a coral qt. But make it pretty.
Live rock not fancy so it comes out easy. A tiny amount of sand so it's easy to clean.
And then if you need to you can nuke it if you find a bad bug or or algae.
I have one.

You could put a fish in just for poop or to make a single specimentank. That would be cool.

It can't be called a qt tank for fish though unless your doing ick management and not irradication. (Copper)

I buy more coral than fish so it made sense to me. And I can set up a treatment tank in an hour if I want a fish. And really I usuallybtakes me weeks before I decide to buy a fish.

I guess in theory, I could take out the rock and coral and put them in my biocube if I have to medicate or quarantine a fish? Then when the fish is finished up I can put the rock and coral back in.

My idea was to use the water from my main tanks water change to fill and do water changes on the 10 gallon. Good idea? Not good for any reason?

If you use any sort of medication and have live rock in the QT, the rock can absorb the medication (copper, etc), so putting corals back in would be a no unless you get rid of rock/sand.

Just watch your parameters on the water change water if you're making it a coral QT. Remember, you change water to replenish the good stuff and remove the bad stuff. If you're putting in low Ca/Mg/whatever water with high NO3/PO4/etc then you can eventually throw the system too out of whack for corals.
 
Does anybody have a decent light choice that would work well with this tank for some LPS corals? I've read over and over that the tank is great, but the lightng is awful.

Preferably one that's not going to cost close to my entire 29g tank :). I see some that other guys have used that are $350. I don't need all that for this tank.

If it's shallow enough and just LPS, you might be able to squeeze by with some PAR32 bulbs (I think that's what they're called).

Get a chinese black box for 100buck maybe?

PAR38? I looked them up and I may go this route. Since it works with a regular light socket and this is going in our family room, I may go find a cool looking vintage lamp that hangs over and put it over the tank.

Yea! That! I wouldn't trust SPS under them, but should be fine with LPS. Move the light/corals closer if you see issues. They'll let you know.

Don't plan on SPS in this tank anyways. Just want a simple little tank that's nice to look at (I say that now).

Should be getting the tank by Thursday, and then the fun begins!

Anybody have any suggestions on a heater or circulation pump for a tank this tiny?
 
I like the Cobalt Neotherms. They're flat, so they're unobtrusive in a small system.
