I was just told that the cupramine treatment will kill all beneficial bacteria in the tank. Is this true?

I was thinking about using marine pure blocks as my source

I’m assuming we are talking about this in a quarantine tank. Copper does reduce the bacteria but it doesn’t eliminate it. I had a noticeable build up of ammonia just as my copper level was peaking. Then it dropped to zero after a couple of 10% water changes a week apart. It has stayed at zero since.

Copper kills free floating bacteria (to a certain extent), but once they become embedded in bio media the overall population is better protected. Bacteria are some of the hardest things to kill 100% on the planet, so once the survivors adapt to the presence of copper and begin to propagate themselves any "offspring" will be better protected against copper as well. In time, copper won't even put much of a dent in the bacteria population of a QT bio-filter.

Tried using a well soaked (30 days or more from my sump) Marine Pure 8x8x1 plate from my DT in a 10 qt. When I dosed copper there was a tremendous bacterial bloom (hazy water). Lesson learned. Now I just use a well soaked foam filter pad in my HOB filter & a well soaked foam filter for an air bubbler. Works great.
