Quarantine tank cycle

My display tank has been up for about a month. I have a hang-in filter that came with my aquarium kit that I've never used. I have only live rock/sand and a powerhead in my display tank. If I wanted to seed/cycle the filter sponge for use in a new quarentine tank, how long would I need to put it in the display tank? Can I just set the filter sponge in the tank or do I need to actually run the filter. Or won't this work for some reason?

A week should be plenty. What are you using for ammonia on display?

What are you quarantining?

Assuming it's for fish:

If it's in the budget, pick up a Penguin filter with Bio wheel. It's easier, and the aerobic bacteria will process more ammonia.

I wouldn't seed the sponge filter for any less that two weeks. Depending on what chemicals you are using in the QT, the bacterial population can be reduced substantially, so it's good to start with a healthy culture.

Placing the sponge in a highly oxygenated and high flow area of your display will grow the bacteria faster.

2-4 weeks, it should be seeded

Thanks all. I have 3 fish in the tank currently. A clown and firefish added 1.5 weeks ago and a coral beauty added 0.5 weeks ago. It is a 37 gallon tank. I also added a six line with the coral beauty, but he died the following day. Maybe i did not drip acclimate long enough? The others appear healthy.
Water is at 0 ammonia and 0.5 nitrite (and falling)
