Quarantine tank

I have a 5 and 10 gallon tank to choose for a quarantine tank. Live sand or just empty? And i was just going to use a marineland bio filter for it. Anything else I should consider?

5 gallon is going to be way too small, so is 10, unless you are going for small fish.

i use a marineland filter on my QT tank and just put live rock rubble in it rather than using the filter cartridges.
