thats how I do it. As long as you have good surface agitation its fine. Thats what the bubbles are for anyway.

I use light diffuser on top even though it has the lid. I also bought this bulk sponge filter and cut it to fit the hob filter. The lid collects condensation a lot but the led seems fully waterproof so far. I will post a pic once lights come on. Have a wrasse in there now.

I figured $49 for the 20 gallon with the lid, light and heater was a fine deal. The hob filter was just a bonus IMO.

Thanks! I was reading reviews on that HOB filter. A lot of people say when it gets clogged it over flows and have caused $1,000s in damage.I dont want that! lol... I do think a canister filter would be best to help to ensure that wont happen. Or can i get by without a filter?

I also have the little in tank filter in there to hold more sponge. It's not needed. But I had it laying around so I'm using it.

Aquaclear HOB. The best. Easy to clean the sponge and to add bags of charcoal, etc. Highly recommend.

Just scares me a few people said it leaked everywhere.. Its going to be in my finished basement

Even if you don't use the hob it's still probably worth it. Tank, Lid, heater, light worth the price I would think.
