Oh, I see I forgot about the medicine...I can see why you think that. However remember if you add medicine like copper you dont want that in your main tank. It'll leech into your rock and sand if memory serves me right.
So this might be a stupid question but if you get your first fish shouldn't your main tank be the QT since they are the first or in the actual QT tank.
Yikes. I just did the same thing. On week 5 now. I'm only going to wait 6 weeks as I believe most strains of ich will die out in that period. I'll let everyone know. The 76 days was a lab run test with ideal conditions, parameters for ich. I know its the standard but 6 or 7 weeks of almost daily water changes is plenty for me.I just shot a YouTube video of why I have to remove all my fish to a quarantine I just set up... I gambled and lost!
It'll be a week or so before I get some editing done since I don't really know how to edit videos... I'm doing a whole vlog style channel on getting my tank into reef condition! The "Landlocked Reefer"
In any case, quarantine right from the start. I'll be treating for ich whenever I get a new fish as well as quarantining anything that goes into my DT from now on.
The longest the protozoa ich can live in a fishless environment is 76 days. I will be removing all my hiding spots and all my fish out of a 155g bowfront this evening and leaving it fallow for 76 days.
Absolutely! After 6 weeks there's like a 99% chance all ich is gone. However since I'll be taking everything out and went to the trouble of the QT I'm going to make absolutely sure I'm free of the stuff! Going overboard is my motto now HahaYikes. I don't blame you at all. Those first couple days of damage control were awful. My first ever outbreak in almost 15 years in this hobby. I was definitely not preparedAbsolutely! I'm been living the gamble for just 2 years... but as far as luck goes... mine is the WORST! Now I've realized it's time for more and more and then more research with an over the top scientific approach to things... though that's not to easy with a low DIY budget [emoji1787]. I'm glad my 29g tank was floated and not tempered glass. It was going to be my quarantine that I got excited and started plumbing into the main tank for a planted tank...I don't blame you at all. Absolutely, I'll qt everything from now on. Lost 8 fish and who knows how much money from an impulse buy. Lesson learned. Nice fish room btw!I'm been living the gamble for just 2 years... but as far as luck goes... mine is the WORST! I'm hoping more new people don't make my mistake and start moving slow and quarantining instead of rushing specimens.![]()

Hey NC, good looking out on deciding to QT! I'm going to start treating all my new fish I get right out the gate. All my water comes from a RODI system. Definitely a staple in a new tank. Any new specimens I'll only QT for 4 weeks, unless they show signs of sickness/parasites... then I will treat them for what I find and the 4 week QT won't start until after all signs of illness are goneSo this might be a stupid question but if you get your first fish shouldn't your main tank be the QT since they are the first or in the actual QT tank.
happy reefing!
