Just came back from a family vacation in the Caribbean and brought back (yes, legally) a huge, nice conch shell. I’m contemplating to put it inside the tank as a centerpiece. However, fast forward a year from now — it will be covered with coralline algae and much worse, detritus inside the shell!

Good or bad idea to put it inside the tank?

I have several in my tank. One of them is the home of my hippo tang, so he is pretty big now, another on is the home of firefish, and in the past one hosted a starry blenny. They will not remain pretty, but the fish love to hide in it.

Cool - I might put it inside my soon-to-be all nems tank, hope they will use the shell to dig their feet into. I don’t plan to add other fish, outside of clowns.

You can always bush algae off with a clean tooth brush to keep it clean!
