So I just bought a 29 gallon with stand and canopy. I am wanting to set it up in the living room and primarily house a Valentini Puffer. I will most likely get a couple of other fish but not many. Question is will I need a protein skimmer?

The tank isn't drilled and I am contemplating just running a Canister Filter but am still unsure. I have considered drilling the tank but that really starts to bring the cost up.

This is really for my fiancee, we had a puffer for almost 2 years till he jumped out of my reef tank, I cant add one back as I know have a clam. Any advice on how you would set up this tank is appreciated.

You should be able to start up the tank with a canister filter. You will need to clean it on a really regular basis.Eventually you will want a good protein skimmer. This will physically remove waste products for you and lessen the work load.I would seriously consider drilling as well.It will save money in the long run(overflows are spendy). The larger volume of water will be easier to maintain and you could keep equipment in there for a neat display.Maybe even keep a coral or two down there.

You can use a HOB skimmer. If you don't want one, you don't need one. You will be fine with just a canister filter. I stopped using skimmers, got rid of my fuges, got rid of some sumps and I enjoy my tanks so much more without all the extra crap. If you want to keep it simple do it.
