Hi all,

I'm just setting up a new tank, and had a question about using skimmers.

I understand they should be run for a week or so to 'break in', is that right?

Currently my sump water is deeper than is recommended to operate the skimmer (for either a dry or wet skim). I've ordered a stand to sit the skimmer on, but it won't arrive for a few weeks.

If I turn my skimmer on now, will that help it break in before the stand arrives? Or will it not work because it's sitting in water about 11cm/4" deeper than it should be?

Tank is still cycling, there are no fish in it yet.

Thanks @blaxsun - I can't lower the level in my sump (it's as low as it can be while having the ATO float valve working), so I'll just wait for the stand to arrive before I turn the skimmer on.

You’ll either want to raise the skimmer up or reduce the water level.
I took my big salt mixing tub, made enough salt water for proper WL for skimmer and ran that for a week waiting on my stand. It helps remove mold release agent s. But as I dead on another reefers post you will still have to break n skimmer from what's n your tank water.took me 3 months to running perfect but could have shortened that by taking out everything ,even clear froth, until finished over foaming. Good luck
