I'm looking to build a frame for my 55g tank since the stand it came with is A. Flimsy which is no good. And B. it's not as tall as I would like it, I guess I'm strange but I'd like to be able to see the tank when I look into it instead of crouching down in front of it the way I see it is that I'm looking to spend more time looking in it and enjoying it the. Having my hands in it, I have a step stool for that. Now that that is done the question is what is the preferred fastener for the frame work nails or screws?

I'm also considering making the tank viewable on the front, back, and one side as well as putting the stand on heavy duty locking casters for ease of moving.

The caster are a good idea but a tank is top heavy and may fall over when you go and move it with me having a large tool box at work it has fell over with me two or three times when I have moved it and something stops one of the wheels not fun to pick up and worse to have to clean up all the water

That is a thought to consider, I don't plan on moving it often but much more convenient then having to empty the tank to move it if need be. And since I don't have it plumbed for a sump it would make it a little easier, but a good point none the less.

All it takes is the first time you move it and with the footprint being just 1 foot wide the chances are high that it will happen

Won't the seams give if you move it with water in it. Or maybe I'm reading this wrong and you don't plan to try and move with water on it. For fasteners glue and screws

Very true, especially withe the tank being higher then normal including a canopy. Won't be doing the casters, just wish there was a way to make it more convenient to move even though they aren't really made to be moved around but it is what it is.
