I just opened a new bottle of reagent for my Hanna alk checker (HI772). Did a test, and got a vastly different number than yesterday (which was the last of an older bottle but still was NOT expired). It read 7.7, which my water has been running now for months at 10.1-10.3 (yesterday was 10.1). I did a second test thinking the reading was my testing error. Nope. Second test 7.7.
This made me very curious so I looked at both bottles and the old and empty bottle has the number HI772S on it. The new bottle is HI755S.
The 772 comes with my model which gives alk in dKH. The 755 I'm guessing comes with the model that gives alk in ppm. I bought this bottle about a month ago online as an eventual replacement.
Question: does it matter which Hanna alk reagent you use in a Hanna alk checker? One gives its reading in dKH and one in ppm.
Please someone tell me that it absolutely does matter and I need to get the correct numbered reagent! The alternative is my alk dropped nearly 3 dKH in one day!!! My concern level is pegging in the red.

We updated the reagent product code used for the HI772 dKH Alkalinity Checker. The new code is:

HI772-26 Marine Alkalinity Checker® HC Reagents for HI772 (25 Tests)
http://hannainst.com/marine-alkalinity-checkerr-hc-reagents-25-tests.html

This have been updated from the HI755-26. The chemical used is still the same we just created a new code to match our reagent categorization system. The HI755-26 Alkalinity reagent for the ppm Marine Checker is still an active code and the reagents can be used interchangeably.

I will DM you now and will get your matter taken care of immediately!

Remarkable customer service from Hanna. Big thanks to Kevin for answering my questions. It seems the former bottle was compromised somehow. I'm not sure how, but at least it was giving consistently incorrect readings in the 10 dKH range. Emphasis on consistent. It looks like my alk really is (and has been) sitting closer to 7.7, which to tell the truth I like better.
