Hey everyone, after a quick search of the forum I haven’t really come across a solid answer or recommendation for heating such a large system. I’m combining my two systems (a 125 and a 110) into a single 350 gallon tank with a 100 gallon sump/fuge. I currently run dual 300w heaters on the 125 and two 250w heaters on the 110 for redundancy and I’ve never had any issue maintaining my set 79 degrees. My home’s ambient temp rarely dips below 68 degrees. My initial reaction is to run dual 400w heaters on this but i am questioning myself if this is going to be enough wattage. I’d rather run a couple larger heaters rather than a bunch of smaller ones simply due to the real estate they’ll take up in the sump not to mention the increased number of outlet requirements on my Apex. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

You still have multiple redundancies if one goes out.

I have a water volume of 475 gallons right now. I am using a 500w finnex titanium heater and it keeps my tank at 78.0. I have had one fail in less than 6 months though and I have heard quality is sometimes an issue with these heaters. I think running duel 400w should work fine.

For reference my tank is in the basement where the temperature is 66.

WHen it failed did it cause any issues in your tank or just stopped working? I like mine because it heats the water quickly.

No issues. My GFI broke and my apex warned me. I tried to problem shoot and my AFCI breaker blew with the load. So no problems. I’m not sure but a regular breaker should have protected me. The GFI for sure did it’s job though.

Excellent, thank you all for the replies. I was thinking dual finnex’s but I wanted to hear from someone who is using them on this site and not just some random reviewer on amazon. I typically run my heaters with one being the main heater and the other a backup only coming on if the temp falls below 77.6 on my Apex. I was thinking dual 500s but the dual 800s may have a little more grunt for the water volume. Less than a $10 difference on amazon too for an addition 300w in power.

I initially used the 800w that's the one that broke. I had a 500w for a different tank and put it on. Works well. I would recommend a different temperature controller then use the apex for backup. I use a reefkeeper lite for temperature control and an apex for backup. They way if the reef keeper breaks my apex will shut it down and warn me. If then apex malfunctions the RK should keep the temperature controlled.
