Question about how long a fish can survive in mail

I ordered a blue throat wrasse from liveaquaria.com they shipped yesterday late. Of course FedEx as always messed up and I won't be able to get the fish until Tomorrow around 9:00 am. Any chance I get a live fish?

Tough to say, its certainly possible. may not be worth acclimating him with the bag open after that long though. Just float to temp and put him in.

You should be ok unless your temperatures are crazy. I had a blue throat trigger last 48 hours in LA box and do great for 6 months until he went carpet diving.

Definitely not preferred by any means and I would probably only do a temperature acclamation as to not risk ammonia toxicity longer than necessary

My experience has been 36 hours but also dependent on how well it was packed.

Also look at how to acclimate to your tank.
Drip method might not be best after 36+ hours in a small amount of water.

I ordered many Wrasses from Liveaquaria. They pack very well and if there is enough heat in the pack the fish can survive perhaps 36 hours.

If FedEx normally delivers to your area in the afternoon, You can call them and have them hold the package at the hub and you can pick it up first thing in the morning.

But Liveaquaria have 14 days warranty so if it didn't make it they will refund back money (not just credit like many others online store). Not sure if they will refund the shipping cost because I always spent enough for free shipping.

Worth noting they dropped the 14 days down to 7 day guarantee, but still better than nothing

In Australia when we sent fish around, it may take up to 72 hours to reach a customer. Of course, it is always with bags filled with oxygen and so on and we have them in bigger bags. The U.S. seems to have an issue with smaller bags, and vastly different temperatures across different locations.

Imo though, still should be able to push 36 hours. Which is more or less how long it would be from when LiveAquaria sent it to when you'd receive it. Good luck!

Properly packaged (and cleaned out) most fish can survive 48 hours no problem if they aren't in extreme heat or cold. Longer than that they can arrive alive but succumb to lack of food or ammonia burn.

It's a tricky vendor/purchaser situation when this happens. If the fish keels a few days later one can't help but feel that it is related to the shipping delay. Good luck!

Liveaquaria ships with lots of water in the bag. If they pumped in oxygen in the bag then 36 hrs maybe OK. At least if this one doesn't make it they refund and you order a new one. I'm a wrasse guy and I owned so many fairy wrasses in the past 7 years. Most of them are finicky but the blue throat I had was very hardy.

I have a package of corals that I bought from a fellow R2R that shipped out yesterday from Michigan. It was delayed due to weather and it won't be here until tomorrow. I don't know if these corals will make it due to the cold in the bag for that long. If they died I won't get any refund because it was not the seller's fault.

Yes my Blue Throat Fairy Wrasse arived alive thanks to liveaquaria.com excellent packing spent over 57 hours in the mail no thanks to FedEx. I have never had a positive experience with FedEx. If you have a choice don't use them I couldn't even speak with a customer service representatives from the United States. I had to call back 5 times to get a person who I could understand. The wrasse is doing good I even got him to eat something the same day. Thanks for asking
