Hey guys! Since my tank is lacking some movement, I’m wondering if I can add 3 Lyretail Anthias in my 75G standard tank. I’m not sure if I should get 3 females or 2 females and a male to reduce the aggression?

Here are my current livestock in 75g:
  • 2 Clownfish
  • 1 Firefish
  • 1 Banggai cardinal
  • 1 Ruby Longfin fairy wrasse
  • 1 Yellow Tang
  • 1 Fire shrimp
I know my tank can handle much higher bioload since I’m using a 270g rated skimmer, a refugium, biweekly water changes, and my nitrates are really low right now at 0-1ppm. I also feed 2-3 times a day.

Please let me know what you think! Thanks in advance. :)

Lyretail anthias get big and slightly aggressive, so I wouldn’t recommend putting more than 1 in your tank. I have had a female for 6 years who is around 5 inches long now, and females are smaller than males. So if you want a group of anthias get some smaller ones like Randall’s, resplendent, dispar, ignitus, or sunset. And you can do any of those in a group of 2-4. With only 1 male of course (or just buy female).

Oh, I forgot to tell everyone that I’m planning to upgrade to a bigger tank in a couple of years. Would you say it’s fine if I get some small lyretails now and put them in a bigger tank soon?

If not, I will look at dispars instead.

How big is the next tank?

Around 150g
Ah ok I think you could do a group of 3-4 in that tank, so if you want the lyretails and you know for sure your getting that tank than you for it. But I always plan for the tank i have, not the one I want to have. Lyretails get big and mean, and I would still just choose dispar they will be less of a potential headache.

You are right. In that case, I will just do a single female lyretail or some dispars until I actually have the tank.

I have three Ignitus in a 100g...they get along fine and the colors are stunning.
They do look amazing! Unfortunately, my LFS do not have them and I do not want to order fish online due to the holiday craziness.

You should be fine
I have every tank member you mentioned with no issues. No aggression other than larger male chasing the girls occasionally
They love food but don’t require frequent feedings. I have 7 mixed anthias
