Their is no shortcut. I look for dead ex live rock, you can tell the difference, at lfs. A neighbor gave me about 25lbs of nice light weight old live rock in a box.
I take the rock and put ot in my frags sump/fuge. It takes about 1 year for it to color up real good. I am only using a cheap Nicrew led but it works well.
I have used this rock to start my latest 20g nano.
