I got a new ultra-black ORA maxima the other day. I placed him low in the tank, on a rock - and in fairly heavy light (Reefbreeders Photon 24). He quickly attached himself to the rock, and was happy for a couple of days. Now though, he's still attached, but I don't really see him opening up very much (if at all).

Perhaps he's not getting enough light? Does he need time to acclimate longer? Should I pull him from the rock and place him in a different location?

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Maximas love light, I would move it up some and see if that helps. If you can move the rock it's attached to would make it even better.

Keep us posted!

Have u noticed him slamming shut? The water flow might not b hitting him right. They like it to flow over them hitting the inhalent siphon first and then the exhalent siphon.

No - he's like very slightly open. He's definitely not slamming shut or anything.

I have all my ORA Maximas on the bottom. The PAR measures just over 100 at highest. This is not super bright. Check for tank mates picking on it, flow as suggested, and make sure it has plenty of room around it until it acclimates. It usually take a week or so until they get really happy. They are not subject to heavy blue light so get some more daylight spectrum to them, at least in the beginning.

These guys are also highly sensitive to being moved. If you move them too much or something is making them unhappy (fish, shrimp, snail) they will close up and not survive. Keep an eye on other inhabitants and flow as stated above.
