Just bought a new Reef Octo 110 for my system and it is foaming water bubbles out of the top. Is that normal for the break in period? I see a lot of posts with people that cannot get a new skimmer to foam but this one is foaming so much I have to take off the plug on the collection cup due to the amount of water entering the cup. It is in 7.5" of water, maintained at that level continuously with an ATO. Is this normal and just wait until it breaks in or should I raise the bottom to be closer to 7"???

It's not odd for this to happen with new skimmers. Things should settle out on a week or so. Also just to make sure the gate valve is all the way open.

And welcome to R2R!!!
Thank you kschweer!! Great to be here and thank you for the advice! The gate valve is all the way open, I just don't want it to be. :-) It is getting some skimmate out though, so that's a good thing. I'm planning on creating a zoa garden, love your avatar!!

No problem at all. Keep us updated on the skimmer. Thank you, my avatar picture is one of the corals I miss most. Best of luck with the zoa garden!

Thank you again, the skimmer is acting a little more normal now, not going crazy pushing water all the way to the cup. I can dial the gate valve down and get some really wet skimmate, but I'm just going to leave the gate valve open like you said, and as intructed by RO. Seems to be pulling some brown skimmate out with the water so I'm happy with it. How long does it take typically to get to normal operating speed?

I would say between 1 and 2 weeks on average, but this depends on a lot of factors. My nwb-110 took about 2 weeks to "calm" down.

I have to same skimmer on my seahorse tank and it did the same thing after treating with red slime remover. After adding some carbon in a bag in the sump, it worked perfectly again. My skimmer is in 8'' of water.
