I'm still in the pre-planning stage and trying to think of things I will need in addition to my DT setup. I will definitely have a QT. As I start my new tank, and there are no fish in it, do I still need to quarantine my first addition(s)? Also, can a QT also serve as a place to quarantine corals if there are no fish in it or should I plan on a frag tank as well?

definitely QT your first addition! You dont want to introduce ick into your new display with those first fish when you plan on going through the trouble to QT all your livestock after that. You dont want to use your fish qt for coral because you may need to use copper in that tank. Copper will make it difficult to keep any inverts including coral. I would plan on a small frag tank for corals and other inverts.

When I started my tank a few months ago I still QT'd my first fish ( Royal Gramma and Fire Fish), because I didn't QT the CUC so I wanted to leave the tank fallow for 72 days just in case. By the time the QT period was up so was the 72 day fallow period in the DT.

I understand. Thank you for your replies. So now my original thought of having a little nano reef with 2 fish and a coral has turned into a 3-tank project with the 20 gallon being the QT instead of a DT. My goodness, how things explode in this hobby ;)
