Question about plumbing please advise

i just set up a 125g that has a one inch bulkhead with barb at the end. What do you guys use to connect that end to a pipe?

Sounds like it's setup for braided vinyl hose. Found at local hardware stores.

Im sorry replace wih what? Take out the bulkhead ?

It could be that it's a threaded bulkhead and the barbed end is male threaded. Is that the case? If so, just remove the threaded barb fitting and insert a threaded male to pvc slip adapter for pvc pipe.

Yes. Remove the bulkhead and replace with new bulkhead and hard pipe all the way to the sump. This was just my first reaction opinion to your post.

Potential advantages are:
Less risk of kink or crush reducing flow.
Less risk of algae growth inside pipe.
I believe it looks better.
The barbs have a small ID compared to hard pipe and fittings so probably better flow.

Potential issues with a change to hard pipe are:
More work and more costly.
Might be hard to remove bulkhead and clean glass (specifically if is on the bottom of the tank in a deep overflow).
More permanent and not as easy to change in the future.

Nothing wrong with the flex tubing. Many people have it without problems. So don’t think it’s required to change to hard piping.

I have two overflows and the kits come with 6 bulkheads. I think theyre all barb but ill double check

First off I'm a big fan.

You can also use some silicone hose rather than braded. Its more flexible.

Are you talking about the return or the drain?

For both. I had someone look at them while i wasnt present and from what they described its both threaded and barb. Guess ill have to cut an inch or two of the end of the bard and slip on threaded adapter. Of course i have to look at them tomorow to confirm what i have.

Some of the mass market tank overflow kits come with bulkheads that have an integrated hose barb. I don't personally like them because the hose barb is a restriction point for flow, but if that is not a problem in your system, then they work just fine. Flex PVC will not fit over them, you need to use the correct diameter vinyl or silicone hose plus a band clamp.

All I could think of...
