I have decided I want my sump to be directly under the tank in the basement. I have been trying to find a pump that can handle the 12 ft head. I am looking at the Reef Octopus 10000w which is rated about about 800 GPH for 12 feet which is what I need. However I see in the fine print it is not rated for high pressure head? Is 12 feet too much for this pump? Which kind of pump is best for this type of return situation.

Thanks!

Edit: After checking some older threads now I am leaning towards a mag 24. Any thoughts?

I've used iwaki's for the longest time. This last build I'm using a panworld 150ps. Quite and built like a tank, no heat and lasts for years and years with little maintenance.
Pumps 12' of head with no problem.

Mags are good, but i never liked the plastic impeller housing on them, plus they can be loud and produce some heat.

I use a mag 5 for my water changing station and had to replace the housing once do to a crack in it. :(

I have just completed a new build with the exact configuration. Check out my build thread in members tanks and i also linked it in the Pittsburgh area. I ended up , after much research witha Reeflo barracuda. Yes, it is a bit loud , but since its inthe basement I dont care. Moves a ton of water and only about 230 watts. In fact , going to install a manifold to run reactors to decrease the flow because it in too much for my planned drain (details in build thread).

That ReeFlo looks nice, but is a bit out of my budget. I can't justify a $400 pump for a $25 home made algae scrubber. Anyone have any experience with some cheaper units at a head of around 12ft?

That might be tough to do. I've always did external return pumps for their reliability and heat reduction. Most internals can't produce the head pressure needed beyond 10'.

We need some help on this: #reefsquad

What do want to spend?

My 150ps gives me enough head pressure to feed my DT upstairs and feed my manifold that I run reactors off of.

I am now open to the possibility of external pumps and the spec sheet for the one you suggested looks good!

Yesterday I obtained a "Drilled Sump" for my basement so I believe an external could work nicely.

The added benefit of using the bulk head and external pump is I can make a T split and ball valve for easy water draining for changes.

Manifold allows me to attach reactors as needed and also waste off excess head pressure to the DT, which allows me to adjust the water level in it.

You could also run a algae scrubber off of it as well. All off one pump! Bonus!

I have 16 foot head height, and my Iwaki MD-100RLT handles it with extra volumn to feed my reactors and fuge. The Japanese versions of the Iwaki (no plug attached when you buy it) have the best head height.
