Right now my new setup hasn't gone live yet, but when I was working on placement of all the gear in the stand I noticed something about the Reef Octopus 150 Classic 150 space saver skimmer. The collection cup when seated is in there pretty tight and requires a good bit of force to remove. What I'm wondering is would it be safe for me to put a little silicon lube or grease on the o-ring to make it easier to pull the cup when I need to empty/clean it? Or will it just get easier to remove once things get wet. I'm just picturing me struggling to remove the cup due to the tight space and then spilling skimmate all over the place lol. This will be my first time using a sump & skimmer so I've got no past experience to go on.

Im pretty sure silicone grease is food safe and is used on bearings for industrial food mixing equipment etc. So I do believe it's aquarium safe.
It might be, mine is the same I just twist as I pull, seems better.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I'll see how it goes once there's water in the setup and the skimmer is running. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't gonna be a bad mistake to grease it up and have a negative side effect somewhere else.

All my skimmers are reef octo's and they are all tight when new. Get a little slime, water and some age on there and they loosen up a little.

Good to know, thanks bud!
I am about to deal with it for a bit on my sons new build that should be wet this weekend, so thanks for asking. it is something I forgot to go over with him, since he wants to do this on his own lol. I will now make sure to tell him "Do not yank the cup when it is full!!!!"

Or you can tell him its much like nutella, and makes a fine breakfast spread on toast.

They do, I just looked at the one for my sons new 110 classic. Any food grade silicone grease will work fine. I guess after 5 years of the newest one I have running, the slime is the lube lol.
my old super reef on the 220 is fairly older so its plenty loose. Even after a couple years of use the 150 is still pretty firm.

I recommend if you have room, you can buy/diy a waste collection cup. I've had mine running for a few weeks and really liking it.

I like automation :) I'll have to scour youtube for a video on that, unless you have a link handy. Also a general setup video for the skimmer would be nice since the assembly picture the manufacturer provided isn't super awesome for a n00b like me lol

N00b myself here. Mine fit too tight also. I got tired of spilling the juice ;Vomit and emptying it every other day. Here's a DIY vid...

This is pretty nice, auto shut off and all...
