I recently found a bunch of this incredibly porous rock washed up on the beach. I picked up a large plastic bag full to the point I couldn't tie the handles together and it only weighs about 2kgs. I was wondering if I could put it in my tank?
I've been told it's volcanic rock (not to be confused with lava rock) from and Indonesian volcano and the lava had solidified and eventually washed up on the beach.
I'll get some pics tomorrow.

You might have I leave it in the sun for a while to kill anything that could be living in the rock

yes, let it dry out and then wash it really well. I'd see what you have at that point before adding it.....pictures would probably help

I've left it out in the sun for a few weeks already so it's nice and dry. It's been raining like crazy for the last few days though. Hopefully it hasn't washed away. If it's still there this arvo I'll give it a wash and post some pics!
Thanks everyone.

See, without a chemical analysis for the presence of elements like mercury, iron, that kind of thing, it's difficult to know safety for sure without testing then long-term on live animals to see if it leaches bad things. :/

Kinda looks like pumice
Could be safe but I wouldn't add it - would stick to limestone based rock

A few of those pieces are definitely pumice - particularly big piece in the last pic. Probably safe to add, but because it's porous, it could be a detritus magnet, so probably needs to be in high flow area if you do add it.

Thanks for the input everyone.
It's all the same rock, just doesn't look like it because I haven't cleaned it yet. I need to stop being lazy lol.
I have a lot of thinking to do...

Without knowing its exact composition, I wouldn't use it. I use the rock that coral creates because I know what's in it.
