probably precipitation

depending on the salt brand, it is probably brownish and is the anti caking agents used in many of the salt brands.

There is an article somewhere on google that rates a bunch of salt brands, giving pros and cons and talks about the anti caking agents which is a con. I'll use those salts in my brutes as I can easily clean them, but in my in 60 gal vat. Only salt without those agents goes in there

Im using instant ocean salt crystals… do these things affect the water quality?

I've never had an issue using. I do have a bucket of it now but only for my brute can. When I need to get more salt, I'll go with another brand. People have sworn by IO for years. I just don't want the brown stuff in my water container. I used it to start my 240--didn't want to spend the $$ on expensive salt for that amt needed.

that works if you don't need 40-60 gal lol's. Too costly! Plus, I don't trust a lfs to have good rodi or saltwater.

Reef Crystsls is a special case with brownish gunk that many see, and I suspect that is something related to the vitamins or edta that is added. Normal IO does not get that deposit, just calcium carbonate,

is that bad or is it fine lol

I don't want vitamins or chelators in a salt mix, and many folks dislike the gunk for reasons I do not understand, but unless you intend to store the mix unstirred, it should be fine.
