Hello all,
I currently have a 22g AIO cube mixed reef (2.5 years old) and am debating on switching up to something that would fit on my desk - so a 10g IM nuvo. There are a couple reasons I would like to do this: to achieve a minimalist scape, to make moving from apartment to apartment a bit easier (school life), take me from using ~10 outlets to using ~5, and because I am starting to get a little bored with my current setup...
In the new tank I would take ONLY some of my higher-end SPS and my clowns, and either purchase or create a floating structure that is magnetically attached to the AIO chamber wall and I would leave the bottom bare or grow some encrusting corals down there. I would consider adding a small rock from my current system and bring along a couple my BTAs, but keep them low enough that they wont have a chance to move to the floating structure and sting any of the SPS. And I would obviously only water that came from my 22g system, so there shouldn't be any fluctuating parameters for the corals.
My main question is about the floating structure. If I was to do this, I would it made of an artificial rock (I think they use a type of resin, not sure). This would mean that I would have very minimal, if any live rock in my system. Does this cause a problem? If so, would adding some biological filter media alleviate this issue? Would filling up the back chamber with biological media cause a "cycle"?
