I currently have a DIY 40 breeder sump. It suffices but knowing what I know now, should have built another way.

Anyhow I was thinking about snagging a trigger 36 ruby elite that someone is selling.

Would this work with a beananimal drain system? Or would I need to go with the emerald version? If the emerald, I may have to wait til Black Friday and hop they go on sale.

Anyone with either the ruby 36 or emerald 39 running a bean drain?

I see no issues with a Bean and a ruby 36.

i have an emerald 39. it comes with 2 plate options. 1) 2 holes, 2) 3 holes. so you could run a bean animal type setting on it i would think.

i would suggest you check out one of the sponsors here - Elite Aquatics Sumps. they have a 25% sale going on right now. thats a larger discount than Trigger has every had IMO.

I think the smaller sumps are all sold out though.

I saw them the problem I would have is nowhere to run my chaeto.

Drain area is also the skimmer area, 2nd is the fug (cheato), 3rd and last is return.

But how do you set the drain pipes to be 1" under water when it looks like they are draining right into a sock (which is why I think the emerald would be more wise because you don't have to use the socks)

If I can understand it, the ruby 36 saves a bunch of money

extend the PVC so it sit 1" under the water line, and cut the ends at 45%.

hmm. Not too many run the bean with this. I see the elite version but the refugium runs into the skimmer area and not the return. If you have pods, good chance they would get skimmed out?

with a bean overflow only two drains ever have water in the lines the third is for emergency, if somehow the other two are blocked.
that pipe can be run into any chamber as it's 99% dry most of the time.

I don't even need to run socks. Just run the pvc down through into the water. Skimmer gets what it can, flows over to the refugium, breaks down. Take out the filter pads on the racks, and pods get to the return and into the tank.

Having said all that, think I am down to the ruby 36e or the emerald 39.

I have used a ruby. Ended up not liking it. Got a lot of micro bubbles, don't think it has enough baffles. I went back with a 40 breeder. Sometimes simpler is best, or I think

The emerald 39 has bulk heads in place and they are set to run down under the water line and then the water rises over a baffle and flows over into the filter socks.

I like the sump but its too small for my 225 obviously. The benefits are that I have lots of room for my other equipment and the 39 will hold the ConeS CO3 skimmer. I had planned to make up for a smaller sump with frequent and or automatic water changes.

We will see how that turns out.
