I'm working on putting together my first tank and I was watching a video on YouTube about lighting and how long you should run your lights. The guy mentioned near the end of the video that in CA because power is pricey some people run their lights at night because it's cheaper after 6pm.

I would love to hear thoughts and opinions. Is it effective? Does it really save much money? I'm just curious.

I think that depends if you are on a time of use meter. For me i run my during the day but i am running leds. If you are running time of use meter the power is cheaper after i believe 6pm

I think at night or later during the day is more efficient. Besides, no one is home to look at the reef during the working hours (for the most of us), why not make the fish/corals work for us :-); I used to turn on the light for 8 hours starting at 8am; I would feed the fish then go to work. I could only enjoy the reef during the weekend. Now, I start the light about 3:30 till pass midnight....
I don't know if they charge a different rate at night as I don't see that on the bill. However, I am sure the capability is there with the newly installed smart meters.
