My question is this: Let's say a rainbow chalice has 4 colors and the frag it came from only contains 2 of the 4 colors, will it get those missing colors back when it grow bigger or will it stay as a 2 color chalice?

Thanks in advance.

Not an expert but I do own a few "rainbow" chalices. Having seen pics of people's mini colonies I would suggest you purchase a frag with as much of the colors you desire the most. A good example is 2 Dynamite colonies I seen for sale here on R2R. Both had very little red on them. Almost looked like a Blue Crush. My piece has a lot of red on it compared to the 2 I'm talking about. You wouldn't even know they were the same piece side by side. Even if the colors that aren't there do grow in later you need to ask yourself... How long are you willing to wait for that little speck or streak of color? A year? 2 years? 3 years?

This is a good question that I haven't seen discussed much. I think it should be. I think that frags being sold of rainbow chalices should be priced according to the colors present on that frag and just not by eye count or size alone.

Hopefully Joann doesn't get mad at me for reposting her pic. That's her piece that I believe she sold. One would assume that the chunk sticking up in the middle is the frag she originally started with.

Very good point.

The only way to change how people price things, is by changing how you buy things. So buy smart. (Make sure that the price matches the colors you are getting)

Desirable color is subjective. Maybe you want more blue or you want more red. Can anybody else post some pics?

Of course, but I'd imagine that when the average chalice nut hears "SC Dynamite", they think Red with crazy yellow, blue, and green. Not Blue with green and a splash of red.

Yes as long as the mother colony had it and it may take time for it to appear or my show at the start. The only time one of my chalices didn't show its true colors was due to it coming from a tank that had been treated heavily with copper. So it always looks washed out. IMHO

Thanks for the replies guys, I am thinking it won't get the colors back if the frag doesn't contain it originally. Any vendors can comment on this? Sexy corals? WWC? JFox?

it should get the colors back, when you buy brown corals they color up right. same deal

I am in no way an expert but I will share what I have seen. It should over time develop the colors. You also have to realize that flow, water condition and light can influence the colors.

For the most part I think it is already happening that people are pricing due to the desirability of the colors on the frag. I find this with reefers selling and vendors that offer WYSIWYG frags. Cut to order frags that you do not see practice this less.

I've had 15 different rainbows and In my experiences if the frag is some rainbow and some blue the blue will stay blue but the rainbow will develop more colors as it grows So the key here is to buy frags with as much rainbow to them as possible :)

My experience here is very limited, but a few years back I bought a red/purple/blue no name chalice. I took a few frags, trying to get all colors where possible, but one frag ended up just purple. I have a 2 year old, 2" plain purple disc taking up space in my frag tank now, no signs of the other colors coming in.

This is one reason that I love these rainbow chalices coming out, you can never have the same frag twice like all the others such as the convicts and watermelons.

I wonder if there is a variable that causes these chalices to grow out certain colors the way they do?

I am always wonder if soaking the LPS pellets we feed them in food grade dye will add a certain desirable color to it
