Many websites online say that leaving a bowl of vinegar on a counter will absorb bad odors. Is this actually true?

@Randy Holmes-Farley

Here’s only one example (there are tons of more posts just like this one)
Room odors.
  • Pour some vinegar in a small bowl, then let sit overnight to erase odors.

Usually cleaning blogs say this. Fact or myth?

Brings back memories. My grandma always did that. The flipside is her house always smelled like vinegar lol. Smell of vinegar still makes me think of her. I have no idea how well it actually works though.

The acetic acid in vinegar neutralizes alkaline odors, while things like baking soda neutralizer acidic odors. Activated Charcoal is another good way to get smells because it will absorb anything that will bond with carbon, which with long enough time most organics will.

Yes - it neutralizes alkaline odors.

What is “alkaline” vs “acidic” odors?

If something smells like musty, humid, frog sewer, is that alkaline or acidic?

I had many QT tanks in one room which produced a lot of odor. I just removed them and am in the process of deep cleaning the room. I opened the windows already, but my sister and her husband are coming over and I really want this room odor free! :)

Is there a carpet on the floor? A cat or dog roaming about?

OH - BTW - the vinegar in a dish thing is more for cooking and local odors. Why not try spraying some vinegar in the air (in a mist) - you can look at multiple websites to get the dilution.
