So this is for people with barebottom tanks this is not a debate I am going barebottom and not changing my mind only thing I'm trying to figure out is I have a compartment in my sump so I was either thinking of putting a 7" sand bed which would equal to a 2" sand bed in the display or just completely no sand and just throw some extra live rock in it what do you barebottom reefers think?

I say if you add sand in your sump, only add 2" max.

Dont add sand to it. You could always have a denitrator hooked up if nitrates get high

Yep sulphur denittator would work awesome if u get nitrate issues

Just add rock and macro. In the past I've had detritus accumulate under the rock so on my current build I'm building a table out of egg crate so water can flow under the rubble.

Do you need a sump in a BB other than for ease of plumbing and adding more volume to your tank?

IMO, if you add anything to your compartment, add it live.

And best of all, I would say add live rock, since it's much easier to clean and take out than sand is.

I've only ever had BB tanks in my entire reefing hobby experience. I cannot attest to having a sand bed.
