I am setting up a Neptune DoS for auto water changes, and am wondering if it is necessary to use a heater in the NSW container. I will be changing out 3% over 2 hours. (2 gallons in a 65 gallon system) I'm thinking that this is slow enough that the temp in the display should not be affected.

I really don't see this being a problem. I change out 1/2g daily in a 34g tank manually and my tmp drops .3° :)

I don't use a heater and use the DOS for 2 gallons per day water chang. works great.

I never heated or stirred (after the initial mixing) the water I used for slow daily water changes.

Then closer the two temperatures are the better. Use good judgement.

If the tank is at 81 and you change 3% with 70 deg F water, the temp will only drop to 80.67 deg F, and since you are spreading it out over two hours, the tank will likely keep up in temp just fine.. :)

Thanks Randy.
One more question. How long does your mixed saltwater sit. I'm planning on a months worth at a time. Do you think I can still get by without any power head in there after the initial mixing?

Yes, I kept mine a month or more. As long as it is a mix without organics in it (so not Reef crystals or Tropic Marin Bioactif, for example), then there's nothing to use O2 in it and it should be fine without stirring.

I use fritz and mix up 2 months worth of water. I change out 2g a day. I do have a jebao pump in my vat for circulation but I have not had any problems.
