I had an unfortunate incident happen today. We are out of town and my father in-law some how scooped out storm clown on top of the mesh top of our tank. It was the male of my pair. My question is what is the best way to introduce a new clown in the tank.

You would introduce a clown that is much smaller than the one you currently have.

You'd want to introduce as large a male as possible that is still smaller than your female. A way often recommended is to introduce the male via a breeder box to allow the female get used to the new male.

Did you get a second clownfish? Wondering how your experience was? I'm wanting to add a second one in my tank.

Yes I did. I bought a fish similar in size as the one that passed and put him in an isolation box for about 3 days. Put him in the tank and had zero issues.

Then disaster struck again this time of my doing and had the replacement fish do the same thing where he got scooped with the top and died.

This time I purchased a similar size and just put directly in the tank again zero issues.

I can't speak to what was the success but I believe its getting a fish that is larger (if you have a small fish already) or smaller (if your current fish is larger.) Which helps them figure out dominance quickly.

It could also just be pure dumb luck.

If you are worried I would go isolation box for a bit so they see each other for awhile before letting loose in the tank.

I lost one of my clowns due to jumping out through my mesh lid, and my remaining clown was extremely depressed. After a week I was able to get her a new mate, and I made sure to get one a little smaller than her. Not a huge difference in size but a little bit smaller. I added the mate with no isolation and I’ve had zero issues. They’re a beautiful pair and never leave each other’s side.

That's good to know. I'm going to be upgrading my tank soon and am thinking that's when I'll add a smaller one.
