I was reading through the bean animal over flow thread. I see he went from 1” bulk head to a 1.5” bulk head. I was wondering if this really makes any difference or would sticking with 1” throughout be the same thing? The bulkhead is the limiting factor as far as flow.

I moved this over to the equipment forum for a better response. It may help if you tell us a little about the tank you're designing/putting together. Size of the tank, any existing bulkheads you're working with, etc.

I believe if you read the reason behind it it was due to space. At least that is what I remember. I don't know if the plumbing below the bulk head changes it or not but you may be correct. I can say that my bulk head fittings on the overflow are also 1.5" but due to space inside the overflow box I also had to go down to 1" inside the overflow. So exactly matches what he did but was not my intent. Just how it worked out. I can say it moves more than enough water and I have it dialed down due to the return pump I'm using which is a Cor 15.

The size of the drain piping is entirely dependent upon the amount of water you plan to put through it. The weir is a limiting factor here as well. A 1" siphon will move plenty of water, but a stand pipe/emergency much less.
