Dont know about you guys but I have a bad habit of getting distracted while it counts down the 3 mins and it shuts down before I can look at the reading. Can I refill the second vial with tank water and restart the process but reuse the mixed vial? If so, how long is the mixed vial good for before it starts giving a bad reading?

Not sure. I have done that a couple times and feel the results are off each time. So I just redo it.

My normal procedure to save time, batteries, and preventing it from turning off is to use 2 vials normally. 1 with tank water. 2nd with the mixture. Mix for 2 minutes then turn on the checker and run both back to back.

Once it is running the sample for 2 minutes I can use the tank water vial to run my hanna alkalinity checker to save time.

So you think either the checker shutting off or the mixture sitting out too long affects the reading? I guess I'll just have to test it again to find out. I'll report back.

I agree you should restart to be 100% sure of your results...
With that being said: I too have wondered this so I ran my own experiment bc I was tired of having the same thing happen to me!
I mixed 4 vials (2 with sample and 2 with reagent + sample)
I tested and noted the reading. Then let the vials sit for 15 minutes and ran the test again and achieved the same reading.. take it with a grain of salt as I can’t say definitively that it works

get tank water in vial, cut the package open get it ready to pour.turn on Hanna instrument put vial in .c2 take vial out ,put package in Shake watch clock you should have plenty of time over this way.just be ready when you turn the Hanna on.thats all.

Yeah it happens to me once in a while. I use the same vial for the whole test noramlly unless I miss the timer then I will use the 2nd vial for C1 and reuse the first test for C2. I also feel doing so throws off the test results. I seem to get 0.01-0.02 higher of a reading. Best to start over but I dont worry about it too much.

Accuracy degradation probably depends on how long you overshoot the 3 minute mark...

I always use the timer on my cell phone so there is an audible alarm at the test conclusion. Maybe Hanna will add something audible to their checker some day? (I claim patent rights/royalties for the idea if they do LOL)

I would not use a second vial as it may throw off the zero reading with any film inside it or differences in the glass. It does not take much at very low phosphate readings.
