Question on Hydro Koralia powerheads

I have two koralia 750 power heads for less then two months. They are connected to the smartwave which I am aware of the clicking sound. There was no clicking sound this morning which I thought was odd. Further inspection I saw that the screen cover was broken and the power head was going on reverse.
How many of you have had this problem? Can it be fixed or do I have to buy a new power head?

it seems common for these to go in revers. I usually have to unplu and maybe flip the plug around or keep unplugging till it spins properly. How old are they. My newer ones seem to not have this issue. But I only turn mine off when i want to top down view on my frag tank. So maybe a few times a week.

I've gone through 11 covers in the past year. I'm using their evos with their wavemaker. Its been unreal. Granted, they sent me a box of replacements but now I'm out of those. Sent another email just yesterday and waiting for a reply. You would think they would come up with a fix instead of just continuously sending out replacements. Could that be why the powerheads are going up in price? Covering the cost of all the replacements.... :squigglemouth:

The first time I contacted Hydor they sent exactly the amount I had requested, the second time they sent double, the third time they sent a box of 12. So yes, I think Hydor is raising the price to offset the cost of replacement covers, instead of fixing the bad design.

I was shocked, my very first email to them and at that point I had only lost five - they sent me a dozen. THAT should have been my red flag.

+1 my Evo have the reverse direction problem----even after the washer fix

I ran two Evolutions 1400's for 2.5 years on a Reefkeeper Lite controller switching every 30 seconds. This amounts to over 2,600,000 starts and stops!
I replaced the covers one time at about 1 year under warranty. After that I cut and glued a small piece of black plastic vertically on the outside of the covers so it strengthened the spot where the rubber bumper stop is and never had a problem after that. The plastic was like 2" long by maybe 1/8"x1/8" and attached with super glue or model car cement and blends right in since I used black.

I recently replaced the two 1400's with identical units because I was starting to see a little wear on the leading edges of the propellers where it strikes the bump stop and I felt it was reducing the flow a little. Big Al's had their Evolutions for half price so for $32 each I think 2,600,000 starts and stops was an excellent investment.

These photos make the piece of plastic look larger than it really is but its not noticable when in the tank and does not impede flow. I even did the same to my two brand new ones before I swapped them out!

AZDesert thanks for posting pics. I didn't even know i was missing the bumper from the screen, luckily i found it before it got buried in the sand. Glued it back in place and everything is working fine for the time being.:clap2:

I was just looking at my seven powerheads in my two reef tanks before I read this. Three of them have the grill broken out. I thought it was just me, lol. When these things first came out, I thought they had the running in reverse thing figured out, and that they would work with controllers. I have another seven Koralias in two other FOWLR tanks, fourteen powerheads in total. I know they are not the same as having a Vortech, but they should at least do what they are supposed to. Every time I'm done with feeding mode, I have to check them all to make sure they are running in the right direction, or at all.

They need to re-design the front grill so that it runs forward, all the time, without breaking.

I wouldn't mind getting the mp40 but it's not in the budget. Saving to get the Razor Led light or the AI Vega. I have to flip a coin when i get to the LFS cause i can't make up my mind on the one i want. I like them both!

I had the same problem with all four Evo's I had. I finally changed them out to Sicce Voyagers. They cost more than Hydor, but much less than MP40's.

No, I didn't know that they would replace them til just now, lol. I've been thinking about getting the new Tunze 6208 Wavebox when it comes out, and a couple of Sicce or Tunze pumps for the DT, and ditching the Koralias. I like the flow that comes from the Evo's, but they are worse than the old design in the long run. In any case, I have four tanks going, and I don't need to be fooling around with powerheads every day. I'm just getting to the point where it's irritating me enough that I need to do something about it.

I might have to do some research on the Sicce Voyagers. Do they have magnet mounts too? That's the main reason why i went with hydor.

Yea i didn't know they replaced either till the nice folks here in R2R told me about it.
