I just noticed this yesterday. It almost looks like something took a chunk out of it. Was wondering if you guys think it will be ok and what might have cause this to happen?

Are you talking about the white part near the teeth of the shell, just under the mantle? If so, that is probably new calcification.
Ok why would u worry about the hawk fish?Looks like a scute was broken. Could be from a rock fall or accidental hit by you moving something with tongs. Should be fine. The hawkfish is the only one I would worry a bit about with your fish.
Thanks for the info. And yea the calm looks normal. Thanks againSo there is a little miscommunication re. anatomy. The mantle is the soft part. Scute is part of the shell, and unless the raw edge is actively causing an abrasion where it touches the mantle, then this is probably no big deal. The shell grows from the hinge direction towards the fleshy part. If this is causing any irritation, my bet is that the clam will smooth things out. (Consider how pearls are made). The clam looks fully open, so I really would not think twice about this.
