I just noticed this yesterday. It almost looks like something took a chunk out of it. Was wondering if you guys think it will be ok and what might have cause this to happen?

Royal Grandma! Lol

Nothing in that stocking would really bother a clam - what about your inverts?

Nothing jumps out as being likely to blame for that bite mark...if that's what it is...

Can you come out a little with the camera so we can get a feel where the bite mark is? Your kinda close. To view would be helpful too.

Are you talking about the white part near the teeth of the shell, just under the mantle? If so, that is probably new calcification.

It looks like it's missing I just really wondering if a chipped mantle is really bad for a clam

Looks like a scute was broken. Could be from a rock fall or accidental hit by you moving something with tongs. Should be fine. The hawkfish is the only one I would worry a bit about with your fish.

Ok why would u worry about the hawk fish?

Depending on the species, they can nip at clams. Some do, some do not. They are just on the maybe list.

So there is a little miscommunication re. anatomy. The mantle is the soft part. Scute is part of the shell, and unless the raw edge is actively causing an abrasion where it touches the mantle, then this is probably no big deal. The shell grows from the hinge direction towards the fleshy part. If this is causing any irritation, my bet is that the clam will smooth things out. (Consider how pearls are made). The clam looks fully open, so I really would not think twice about this.
