Hi guys, I'm just finishing up my first ever fishless cycle, and I've been testing a lot more than during my previous tanks. I probably went a little off-book, in that I added 2ppm of ammonia from Ace hardware, along with some Dr. Tim's and then just left it.
Now that the ammonia is cycled out into nitrate, with just the faintest touch of purple in the API note kit, I was surprised to see between 5 and 10 ppm of nitrate. My first assumption was that 2ppm of nitrogen as NH3 would mean 2ppm of nitrogen as NO3, when the test appeared to show me I was wrong, i checked out the molecular weights of NH3 and NO3, and found them to be 18 and 80, which seems to explain the higher NO3 proportion. Am I right in that assumption?
