My QT is in my garage as is my RO/DI holding container is it possible for marine ich dinospores to contaminate fresh RO water? The QT tank and livestock trough are on opposite sides of the garage but still less than the recommended 10 feet. I haven't yet filled the trough and would like to know if I need to move it further away before I do.

Thanks.

Let me do some research before giving you a definitive answer. I feel the risk is minimal and would be close to nil if you could cover the trough. Exposure to pure freshwater would disable the free swimmer, but what I'm uncertain of is how long does the free swimmer need to be in freshwater before it is considered dead.

FYI... adding salt to the trough would be a big no-no.

I kind of figured with it being fresh that the risk would be low but still not a risk that I'm willing to take.

Thanks for looking into this @Humblefish

Only thing I've been able to find so far thanks to @Lionfish Lair is this:

ich-png.386030

But that study was centered on theronts (free swimmers) leaving their tomonts (cysts). However, as you can see some theronts were still released despite being in full freshwater, suggesting the tomonts were not immediately killed. And although tomonts are the toughest stage to kill, this makes me wonder if there is a "delayed reaction" before parasite free swimmers are killed as well. I will keep looking for a more definitive answer though!

Unfortunately the image you posted isn't showing up for me.

Think I'm just going to move things a few feet in either direction to get me over the teen foot threshold. Its sitting about eight feet away now. And find some sort of cover to go over it, which may not completely stop them from entering but wouldn't hurt anyway.

Thanks again @Humblefish
