Question since Im tuning my hob overflow a bit

So I wanna lower the flow a tad bit, Obviously it leads to some bubbles forming in the utube. But will like a little bubble every 30 seconds or longer matter? I know when It's a lot of bubbles It's a problem. It's not forming big ones that may seem to impact performance or loss of siphon.

The reason im doing this is cause I run a one level simple 10g sump with a hang on bracket for a filter sock. The problem is as the sock starts to clog a bit it lowers the flow into the sump causing the sump level to lower and my ato to kick on. I swap them every 3-4 days, So I just lowered the flow a tiny bit to see if that helps it. Normally after I swap the socks and everything resets the level in the sump rises about 1/4 to 1/3 of an inch.

What matters is not having a flow that allows air to accumulate in the u-tube.

I found that little bubbles do add up to big bubbles over time. I check my u-tube every day because I do not know how to predict how fast the little bubbles accumulate. I fix this by increasing the flow. You might try checking the u-tube in the morning and evening to give yourself an idea whether the siphon in U-tube is going to break overnight. You might be OK with tiny bubbles.

I’m running an eshopps pf300 with a stockman. I’ve always noticed that like every few minutes or so the water level in the overflow itself sorta rises a tiny bit in the back. Then drops, does yours do that? This is with the flow back to how I originally had it and no bubbles in the utube

Sorry, never noticed this behavior. I wonder if your pump speed varies.

it's a sicce 3.0 on a ball valve, I was standing next to the tank for about 10 minutes and it didn't do the level change in the overflow. Just randomly does it sometimes, Like as if the a lot more air escapes from the airline on the stockman causing it to slow down in flow for a few seconds. Than ramps back up, The level that it slow down too is pretty much the level it keeps when the filer sock is clogged and need replacement.
 
How are you adjusting the flow? I've been running hob overflows for several years and never get bubbles in the u tube. I have a gate valve on the return pipe and use that to control the level in my overflows.
I have a ball valve on the return, If I keep the high flow I dont get bubbles. Have you ever had the over flow like sorta slow down in flow for a few seconds than ramp back up? Mine does that as if a lot more air escapes from the airline on the stockman causing it to slow down in flow for a few seconds. Than ramps back up, The level that it slow down too is pretty much the level it keeps when the filer sock is clogged and need replacement. Was just trying to find a way to keep a constant flow on the overflow even when my sock starts to clog a bit, It clogs every 3-4 days and Since I swap it so frequently I have near undetectable nutrients

The drain in the HOB looks flooded. You might have mentioned this and I did not understand, i expect to see the water overflowing the white drain pipe.

Yup should be. If I could fit a bigger sump in my stand I would. I’m using a 55g marineland stand, I modified it to fit 18” inch deep tanks so I’m now running a 60 breeder on it. The tanks only about 11 1/2 to 12” deep in the stand so I can’t fit a 20g sump. Since I don’t have a valve on the airline of my stockman my overflow is not running at full speed. It’s a single drain one and I sorta also use the stockman to also control flow (even though it’s mainly for sound reasons). All this isn’t a huge deal tbh it’s just me being bored and wanting it to be perfect.

Well that’s not mine. Mine is also slightly flooded, I think turning the flow up a bit has kept it at a steadier state. But obviously still slightly rises as the filter clogs
