Hi guys I brought a tank and im in the process of making it a reef tank. The tank came with a tetra 1200 external filter do I need this ? As im going to have alot of live rock and a skimmer and sump, or can I use it as a return pump for the sump? Cheers all

Ditch the filter. As stated above, use it on your QT.

I'll plus that. Toss all the media and use it in qt, good place for media bags like carbon too. If you want to use them on a reef tank then leave them empty, but splashing may occur.

Ok guys thankyou. What good return pump can I get for a reasonable price then as I think il need to get one. Thanks

I definitely don't do what I recommend to others at all. I have a Laguna pond pump on one of my tanks only because it was 20 bucks used for 1 week, cleaned l, and has a 17ft head height. Seems to be non corrosive since October. The mfg later informed me it was all stainless steel so a long as you check on pumps' materials you can find some hidden jewels as well. Not that my Laguna is a jewel but it takes water from my basement up to the fish room. I could probably use a nicer one or move the sump closer to my tank and have better flow. It was just one of those weeks when my good pump died lol.
