Running into a weird problem cycling my new tank. I’ve cycled plenty in the past before using dry rock. It’s been cycling for 2 days now. Ammonia is at 0.5ppm, nitrIte is at 0, but crazy thing is nitrate is at 40. I checked with 2 test kits with different lots and expiration dates to see if one was faulty and got same result. Checked the ro/di water from the same batch and it’s reading 0. How is this possible? Could it be from stuff left on the dry rock?

I would guess its still something in the rock that's producing ammonia and the population of bacteria hasn't quite reached the level to deal with it. I would just let it be and keep testing. As you have Nitrates I think it will be a short amount of time.

+1 just wait a bit longer

It could be a false positive too but no point taking chances
