Just wondering if people just slap on what ever prices they want on frags some are pretty outrageous. $$$ Was wondering how it works I seen some chalice frags going for 300 to 400 and took a trip down to salt lake city found the same frag but larger for 100

Some frags seem very high priced to me. Not sure any coral is “must have” with all of the coral options out there. It almost seems like it may resemble a “trophy” for some. The reality is most hobby level people sell for as much as they can get. If a few people are willing to pay up, then that sets the market price for all buyers.

High demand corals that grow very slowly will also always demand a premium. That makes more sense to me.

Personally, I do not think any 1” frag is worth three digits. A colony maybe. I am in this as a hobby, not a business. That is one major change I have seen since I kept my first reef almost 30 years ago: more hobbyists trying to monetize the hobby.

I will add I am not saying monetizing your hobby is wrong or bad. There are many ways to successfully keep aquariums and it is very expensive. Just noting one does not have to pay up for corals and that it is much more prevalent than when I first started.

I have to agree some of these prices are becoming way out there . I remember when the Superman Monti was the hot thing how many nasty messages I got because I was selling my drag for 35 when everyone else was selling it for 75.00 and up . I just wanted to make it available to everyone in the hobby . As a whole we in the hobby played a part in this . If we didn’t buy these high priced frags then they would have to lower the price , but also if we didn’t ask suck high price for our frags more people could afford them and enjoy them in there tanks and spread them around . This part of the hobby has really changed over the 20 plus years I have been in it .

I also remember when 100.00 for a 1/2 to 1” frag of purple monster was considered crazy

I’m lucky that 2 of the 3 lfs I go to have a $10 section. I don’t usually pay anymore than $20 for a frag but I’m not picky when it comes to corals just happy with whatever is cheap

So I thought this was a selling forum not a whining forum..really

It is a forum for reasonable, polite conversations and even debates. Name calling while offering nothing to the discussion is what is against the spirit of this site. If you disagree with the OP, by all means state your case.

I always just thought that some corals were more unique and rare then others, rarity commands a higher price. Perhaps its the difficulty to grow said coral because if its difficult to keep and needs special attention then that would obviously add to cost
