Hi Everyone,

I would like to know as i have just bought a new tank 84 litre (nett )DT and 17 litre sump(nett) it only has 1 drain pipe and the weir is pretty basic. My concern is that it would get clogged then overflow but i thought if i buy another weir just like it and change them between each other every few days it shouldn't get blocked.

Anyway the DT can hold 101.5 litres to the absolute top so if drain got clogged it would be 84litres+ 17litres from the sump which is exactly 101 litres and then i should be fine no?

I'm new so I'm not sure if my theory is correct.

The only problem i see is that i have an ATO of 9 litres so i guess that would be the only water that would overflow ?

Thanks in advance!!

Well, most ATO drip way slower than your return pump...well...pumps. I would think your return pump chamber would run out of water way before your display overflowed. So, I mean your pump would burn out but I dont think it would overflow.

I may be wrong though.

Depending how on how the sump is set up, you should be fine. It shouldn't drain the sump completely. You'll need to figure out the volume of the return chamber to figure out if the ATO will be a problem.

Well the volume

Facepalm !!! Ofcourse lol and here i am thinking I'm clever lol

So basically i would like to add a really small tank 10 litre above my sump for a refugium and i plan to drill an overflow into it so if the power goes out only the waterline over that goes in the sump.

So thinking it through again I'd need to work out the volume of the return chamber+ ATO chamber(if full) + waterline above small refugium drain + Main tank will equal the amount in a blocked drain ?

If I'm reading that right, yes, you'll only need to figure out how much water will drain out the refugium. But if you only have one drain in the refugium and THAT clogs you will have a problem of the refugium overflowing.
