First off if you have several different kinds like a green or a blue reef will they school together? If not and I wanted to do 2 schools of different kinds would they get along together?

I didn't know there were different kinds but i have had success with a school of 11 at one time(yes they schooled). after tearing down my tank cause of a move and starting over a few years later, i have been able to keep only 3 at a time, cause they would kill each other off, they can be very aggressive toward each other.

Did you add the 3 first and then try to add. My LFS said that you can only add them all at once. If you put in a small group and then add they will become aggressive towards the new ones. What type of Chromis did you have. I was thinking of adding two small groups of 3-5 each of the Green chromis and the blue reef chromis.

Coming from experience, you'll end up with one or the other, a single fish of each, as they tend to chase and kill each other off. Unless in a large system. I've added up to 6 at a time, and ended up with only one, in a 125g tank. Haven't tried them in my 240g.

Will they also try and kill other fish like clowns. Or do they just focus on each other?

Never had much luck with them myself.

Honestly, if your going with Chromis there are better suited ones for our systems, ones that are peaceful.
Black & White Chromis (Chromis margaritifer)
Lightning Double Bar Chromis (Chromis opercularis)
Orange Line Chromis (Acanthochromis polyacanthus)
Sunshine Chromis, Purple & Yellow (Chromis insolata)
Vanderbuilt Chromis (Chromis vanderbuilti)

Your tank is too small to have a school that would be successful. Just like everyone else has said, they will pick each other off til there is only 1 or 2 left. I have experienced this in my 90.

when I added they were tiny. 7 at first then 7 again a few weeks later, 3 died and the 11 went on living for a few years, then I moved and sold my system. started back up a few years later I added 7 and 4 died and the 3 have been living peacefully for a year now. I am now happy with the 3 I have, they ocasionally get after one another, nothing that looks life threatening.

Then do you offer any suggestions on what would go well in my tank. It is around 54 gallon rimless with a 20 gallon sump.It is not a cube but a 36 long. (I was told that makes a difference more swimming area) I only have a pair of clowns in there right now. I was told by the critter that with my tank size I would have no problem with 5-7 green chromis. But I am open to suggestions. I like the color hardiness and possibility of schooling in the chromis. Thanks

If you want a good schooling fish check out the cardinals. I have a school of 9 threadfin cardinals. They dont chase each other, they always stay in a school and are perfect inhabitants

I bought 3 green chromis about 2 weeks ago... they killed the 3rd one so the paor left are happy and they kiss too so funny i never see a fish kiss.. ilso bought 3 banded anthias and the 3 of them are schooling.. i have a 65g - 36" so higher and more space to swim.... i think anthias and cardinals will be a better schooling group to get than chromis...

I had 4 chromis, and they killed off two and now I've had two that seem to be doing well for the last 4 months. I like them. I may try to add another at some point and if they kill that one off, then I'll leave them at two.
