We bought some live rock the other day, and they came with Zoa and a mushroom already growing on it. The LFS said that they were on their way out, meaning they were dying. So I just wanted to post some pics and ask how they look....do they look like they are dying? I feel like I keep asking stupid questions...but it is the only way I will learn. I also took a pic of a rock that came with coraline algae......I just want to make sure that the red along with the purple is coraline algae. I guess I'm just worried about the red slime. Any thought? Thanks so much!!!:)

Haha look who it is!! The zoas and mushroom both look fine. I dont know how the LFS could tell you they were dying. The mushroom is fully open and all but one zoa looks like they are open. Not to sure if the red on that rock is coralline. Doesnt mean it is red slime but just keep an eye on it! There is different colors of coralline other than purple. Are u ou planning on having a fish only tank or are you going to add coral?

I've seen both zoas and mushrooms survive in live rock curing tanks and come out fine. I think yours will be fine as well. Definitely coralline algae in the third pic. Not all of it is purple, but a lot is.

I want to have fish and coral in the end....but I know it takes patience! Haha. Like I said....they came with the rock so I just wanted to see if they looked healthy.:) I will keep my eye on the red...what should I look for to know if its bad?

Not necessarily. They might be closed due to stress, water quality differences, light differences. It could take weeks for them to open up. They can die but just because they are closed awhile doesnt mean they will die

I also have a question about my fish.....I started with 3 green chromis and one clownfish....I am now down to one chromis and the clownfish. I was told that chromis are schooling fish and to buy them in a little group. Now that he is down to one....will he b ok, because I don't really wanna introduce anything new to the tank right now....

Chromis are fine alone, there are a bunch of fish that are said to be put in groups bevause they will do better but that its not a life or death situation

It's fairly common for Chromis to pick each other off one by one.

That's sad!why buy in groups then?!?
In a large enough tank with minimal stresses a nice 'small' school of them does just fine....small being 3 to 5 IMO
As with all things however, sometimes things just don't work out the way we want. More often than not I have seen chromis kill off each other over time....no idea why really

Corals look fine to me. You got some extras with your rock. Sometimes within months all kinds of cool stuff will pop out of that rock. You just never know.

I had 3 in a 180g and it still happened. Hard to figure out why.
