Context:

I will be running a JBJ 1/4 HP chiller on my new 210g build. The main reason I'm doing this is that our A/C system is 20 years old. It's bound to go out soon, and with a chiller, I believe I can keep the A/C system going while the A/C gets fixed. And I'm not about to throw $5k at something that is working fine at the moment.

Question:

1) Do I have to have the chiller being controlled by my Apex? (what would be the downsides)

The Chiller will be set up outside to prevent heat being added into the home. The easiest way to plug it in will be into the external outlet which is conveniently on a different circuit than the tank. Which makes things even better!

2) If I did run it on my Apex could I still have it plugged in outside? (how would I accomplish that)

Outside would be about 10' away from the tank itself.

A 1/4 HP chiller will fall within the amperage limits of the apex energy bar outlets, so you can control it that way or independently. I personally prefer to set them up independently - in my case, I have no choice as my chiller draws too many amps for the apex. If you did want to run it off apex, but still locate it outside (highly recommended BTW), you could either use something like the EB4 located near the chiller, a relay outlet like the titan Hercules 3, or even an extension cord of acceptable guage.

An EB4 is a good choice if you want Apex control. It has one outlet that is rated for 12 amps, more than any single outlet on an EB8 or EB832.
You can power the EB4 outside and just run an aquabus cable to the Apex. 10' is no problem.
