Questions about using the red sea reef mature pro kit...

I got this kit as a gift and planned on using it for the 40 gal breeder I'm moving into.
I read the instructions...and slightly confused.
according to manual it says if you have sump to dose sump.
This build is my 1st attempt with a sump system. 20 gallon leaking system has a marineland hang
on back filter. So where do I dose this at in sump? where the water goes thru the sock chamber?
the chamber where I have sand and when tank is ready macro algea? or the return pump chamber?

Also in manual it says you must use a skimmer? Is a skimmer a must?
