I have a 30 gal tank that's been set up for a year now. I used an old 20 gal wet dry as the sump then I bought a small sump so now I am using both because I wanted more water and to have one section for pods. Water flows from display tank using an overflow box in to the wet dry tank which is located behind the tank and stand. It is placed halfway, height wise, between the display and the small sump in the stand. The first section has some live rock and micro algae. The second has the skimmer and reactor in it. Then using gravity and pvc water goes into thefirst section of the lower sump, a very small section where I'm placing a sock filter. Then in to the middle section that has a sand bed with live rock and some micro algae then in to the section that has the return pump. The question is can I use the middle section that has a sand bed and live rock for pods? If so sound I remove the sponge that is between the middle section and the section that has the return pump?

I would advise having the pod growth area after the filter socks as they will not make it to the display when they get filtered out. I'm running something similar. I have a wet dry that the overflow dumps into first section, which houses my skimmer, then through carbon and phosban into the return section. Off to the right I have a refugium that is fed by a small pump in the return section of sump and overflows back into sump. That make any sense. I'll ad a few pics. (This an old pic)

So after the filter sock and before the return section?

With your setup you can have your pods in the middle section.
The sponge before the return pump will act as a barrier to keep the pods in place for reproduction.
Now the baby pods will make it right through the sponge to the main tank

I just got a cheap ato and I'm not sure which section I put the float valve, can you help?

The area that will fluctuate will be your return pump section.
That is where you will want it.

So I mount the reservoir on the wall higher than the sump? So for so many questions. You have been so helpful!

Yes if that is your approach with this.
In that case you are relying on gravity to feed the float.

You have it set up right and I would leave the sponge in between the last 2 sections. The pods that you add Will find their way through the sponge and into the return section and then pumped into your tank.

My personal preference with multiple sump sections and baffles is not to use anything between them. If you have a sponge in the baffle and it gets clogged, it will restrict the water flow and you could have serious issues.
Again, just my personal preference, mostly because just one more thing to maintain and look out for. I have a 3 section sump/Refugium with Macroalgae and pods in the middle section... it has maintained a prolific pod population without a sponge since I first introduced them almost a year ago.
Nothing right or wrong either way, just adding another perspective.
